I've been liking goldfish more and more as I do research and see them in the store. They are nice-looking, curious and come in a wide range of colours. Now, I always figured that they'd learn, like all my fish have, to come to the surface when I am about to feed them, but I never realized they could actually crave touch. This fish, Punch, comes right up to his keeper's hand for some loving. Watch till at least 0:35 if you think the guy is trapping his fish against its will--Punch will swim off a little ways then turn around and snuggle right back up. (And it's hard to trap a fish that doesn't want to be held, by the way.)

The keeper mentions in comments that he takes care not to damage Punch's slime coat by using a water treater that boosts it, and by not actually rubbing too hard against him, which is reassuring.

Now I'm hoping mine, when I get them, are that friendly!

So yesterday we had a meeting at work about the upcoming move to the new building.

They're going all-out buying new cubicles and whatnot (though somehow it's inconceivable to upgrade the moniters from shitty flickering CRTs to eye-friendly flatscreens). They showed us a nice presentation on Powerpoint that I was too far back to read the actual text on, or hear the people talking very well.

This morning someone came buy to ask how I felt now that I couldn't have my fish at work any more (two bettas in small tanks on my desk that take up very little space and make no noise at all. Apparently fish tanks were up on the screen next to toasters and "fancy lamps" as insurance hazards.

Now, this job rather sucks. The company is shitty to its employees, they require overtime without compensation, and I dislike the actual work that I do. I am still here because I like a) making money (first real job and all) and b) I have the internet at my desk. My job is actually one of the best here, in terms of reward for work done. The people above me do far more work, for not enough money. But I still think it sucks, if not enough to leave.

But I think this is the last straw. Might be a stupid reason, but I think that was a fucking shitty way to tell me that. No one else here has fish in their cubicles, just me. People come by to see the boys, see how they're doing, to watch me feed them. None of the higher-ups have ever said a thing about them being hazards or whatever.

Time to get the CV up and running again.

Having both fishkeeping and World of Warcraft as a hobby often makes browsing my own flist momentarily confusing, lol.

Fishy boys at work are both looking great. Mustard-boy (he's too silly to be called Colonel, really) is still kind of fugly-coloured, but he's darker now, looks nice and healthy, and the spot of shiny turquoise on his dorsal fin seem to be spreading, lol, so he's not all yellowish-brown.

Aw man. My girl betta at work looks like she's fading.

She doesn't look sick or uncomfortable, no signs of fungus or bloating or anything, but she's doing the tired "hang perfectly still below the surface" that usually means the fish won't be around much longer...

Well, best to go quietly in a nice warm and comfy tank than in a crappy cup at the store. :(

Okay, WTF. The frog was in the tank when I went to bed last night.

Bonaparte is not crazy bloated like he would be if he had decided to EAT A WHOLE FROG.

THE TANK WAS SECURED AND TAPED AND HOW DID THE LITTLE BASTARD ESCAPE???

Christ. I give up. I'll chuck a divider in there and make a two-betta barracks or something, because seriously, if the frog hate me that much--

Oh wait, never mind. He's sitting at the top of the thermometer behind the black tank corner seal.
